When you think of today’s top Christian artists one of the first things you may assume is that they’ve always had their life together. Perhaps you’ve thought that they lived such a focused life on the Lord that He’s allowed them to have the privilege of living their dream life. Often the truth is much different than our assumptions. It’s what leads the way to revealing how mighty God is because when it comes down to it, we’re all humans that make mistakes.
The lead singer of the band Unspoken is a testament to how God can redeem anyone’s past and make it a ministry to touch the lives of others. Chad’s struggles continued even after he became a Christian but God had big plans for him.
It was in college when Chad accepted Christ in his life but he soon found himself making his own standards and expectations for what that truly meant. Before he knew it, the habits of praying, reading his Bible and attending church faded away. And that’s what opened the door for addiction to grab hold of Chad. He describes it starting slowly with cigarettes and then alcohol until drugs became a part of his normal routine. It became the first thing he did in the morning and the last thing before bed – all day, every day. Things escalated when he and his friends would go out in the wee hours of the morning looking for drugs or selling them to get more money and support their bad habit. But he never seemed to stop proclaiming his love for Jesus. Even still, Chad wanted to do whatever he wanted without worrying about much else.
Deep down, Chad was yearning for God to come in and make everything right. One day, Chad got a card from a missionary in the Dominican Republic. It weighed on his heart until he eventually decided to go down and serve. He was ready to give up his addiction. He prayed on the plane headed towards the Dominican Republic, asking God for divine help. Once there, Chad served and found himself being less self-centered and more focused on the people he was coming into contact with. He began reading his Bible and praying again. One verse really stuck out during this time:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2
That’s when Chad allowed God to change his life as he continued to grow in his spiritual walk. Now, he’s able to take that amazing journey and share it with others who need the hope Chad once was searching for himself.
