When we got the opportunity to attend the SXSW Conference, we knew one stop would have to be the marketplace which brings together local Austin boutiques and hand-selected national brands for a unique shopping experience. This is where you can often find innovative technologies unlike anything you’ve seen before from different companies all around the world.
Walking through the many rows bubbling with activity in the Austin Convention Center, I saw something that caught my eye. Now this isn’t an easy thing to do when you have booth after booth competing for your attention. However, when a business is doing something for good, it seems to always stand out. That’s what Athena by Roar did last week.
Athena is a wearable smart safety device designed to help reduce assaults. Mashable calls it “a safety device created to empower women.” The device is simple and can be clipped on your purse or worn as jewelry. The best part is that it is discreet. Working in tandem with its mobile app counterpart, you can instantly alert your emergency contacts when you need help.
Here’s how it works:
You can select which mode you’d like it to be set on, alarm mode or discreet. The alarm mode is recommended for threatening situations when you need help instantly. All you have to do to enable this feature is hold a button down for 3 seconds. The more discreet option is used for situations when you feel uncomfortable. This is activated when you tap the button 3 times. It will send a text to your chosen contacts that you feel unsafe and send them a link where they can view your location. You can also edit the alert with status updates of how you are doing so that your contacts can stay up to the minute on what you need from them.
It’s a pretty amazing device. So much so that it is on back order until the Summer. However, if you’re really wanting to secure one, you can preorder it. This may be just the thing to give you piece of mind when a family member goes for a late night out.
