The White House said the president wanted to get a first-hand look at the devastation and learn how the federal government can help without interfering with the recovery. Some have criticized the president for playing golf instead of interrupting his vacation to go to Louisiana, though Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards had said he preferred that Obama delay visiting the state so his visit wouldn’t divert law enforcement resources from recovery efforts.

The latter charge carries up to a life sentence. John McCain, a prisoner of war in Vietnam, has criticized Bergdahl’s story and said the Senate Armed Services Committee plans to examine the case after the military court makes its decision.
