The Republican National Convention reaches its halfway point today, after Donald Trump finally claimed the party’s presidential nomination in a roll call vote Tuesday. In keeping with tradition, Trump’s running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, will address the nation. Other key speakers will include Eric Trump, the third child of Donald Trump, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and former House speaker Newt Gingrich.
Roger Ailes, who built Fox News into a profitable powerhouse are in negotiations over his departure from the cable news channel following allegations of harassment. This comes as a shock for most of this 76-year-old media executive who advised several U.S. Republican presidents, including George H.W. Bush, and built Fox News into the most-watched U.S. cable news channel. Amongst his accusers are Former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson and current anchor Megyn Kelly.
A grueling heat wave is geared up to sweep across the central and southern U.S. starting today, heading to the mid-Atlantic and Northeast by the weekend. Sixteen states have already posted heat advisories and warnings, and major cities such as Dallas, Chicago and St. Louis are in extreme heat zones. The heat index, factoring in temperature and humidity, could reach 120 degrees in some locations.
Director and producer Garry Marshall has died. He is known for creating TV shows like Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, and Mork & Mindy; as well as films like Pretty Woman and Princess Diaries. He was 81.
There has been another delay in the opening of the Mopac Express lane. They were going to open the section between 2222 and Parmer Lane on Saturday or the contractor was going to face fines. But the opening has been pushed back because it’s been too hot to pour concrete. The project is already a year behind schedule. There is also a lawsuit that could delay the project in Southwest Austin, claiming the project will hurt endangered salamanders.
