It’s official. After placing first in each of her five competitive rounds, Kathleen Arbogast earned the top qualifying spot in Dramatic Interpretation in the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) national qualifier tournament for the Yellow Rose District. This earns her the honor of competing in the National week long tournament in Salt Lake City this June. The NSDA the largest interscholastic speech organization in the country, providing competitive speech and debate activities, resources, training, scholarship opportunities, and advanced recognitionto over 130,000 students and coaches every year. Some of its more notable alumni include Brad Pitt, Renee Zellweger, Steven Colbert, and Oprah Winfrey. Like these before her, she will compete for the chance to perform on the national finals stage and up to $10,000 in scholarship money.
This is Kathleen’s third year competing in Speech and drama competitions. Last year, she finished a strong season by winning the TAPPS state championship in Solo Acting with her dramatic interpretation of “Blue Window”. This year, Kathleen has expanded her competition participation, competing in as many as ten events in a single tournament. As a result, she has won seventeen tournament awards this year, including eight first place trophies and best all-around tournament performer. This success has also qualified her in to compete in the Texas Forensics Association State tournament in Humorous and Dramatic Interpretation in March. Her coach, William Schatte, said that “Kathleen is always striving to do just a little bit better. It’s that kind of humility, plus a perfect balance of natural ability and competitive drive, that makes her a great student and a great competitor. I am excited to see her take her talent to the national stage.”
