“I need to call my friend and have lunch, it’s been way too long!” … I think this and then forget. Does this ever happen to you? I regret this happening to me all too much in the past 7 years. Since I got married and had kids life is like one big tornado! My excuses are that I’m just too tired tonight, or I can’t because this week is crazy, my kids have too many activities, or my husband works a lot and I feel guilty taking the time, plus I just can’t spend the money. Any of these sound familiar? The thing is what if that person is no longer there to call?
I lost a dear colleague and friend this past week, Jane Shannon. If you’ve ever been to Seattle, you may have heard her beautiful velvety voice on the radio. She has been doing broadcast news for many decades. I had the opportunity and privilege to work with her for several years at a station there. She not only was a dear friend and mentor but one of the most humble, genuine, kind hearted persons I have ever met. She passed away suddenly last week without warning. She is young and had so much life ahead of her. It was shocking! One day she was here and the next gone forever. I’m lucky, the last time I saw her we had a fun Girls Night Out. But there are many of her friends and former collogues that have regrets of not recently calling or getting together with her, now it’s too late.
So as you were reading this who were you thinking about? Who has God put on your heart? What’s the excuse of not calling right now? If they mean something to you there is no excuse…..pick up the phone and give them a call, plan a lunch or coffee date. This quote says it all: “I’ve learned that it is not what I have in my life but who I have in my life that counts.”
I gotta run…..I have a phone call to make 🙂
In memory of Jane Shannon…..
Mother of two and friend to all who knew her.
RIP sweet lady.
