I have fond memories of sitting at the counter in Woolworth’s Diner when I was younger and having a chocolate milkshake with a perfectly toasted grilled cheese. While the sandwich was delicious it was the milkshake that I really loved.
Few things are better than a chocolate milkshake.
Giving up dairy is a bummer. In my twenties, after spending years having copious amounts of non-fat frozen yogurt (because I was afraid of eating fat), I realized dairy was not my friend. Grudgingly I gave up ice cream, frozen yogurt and my favorite, the chocolate milkshake.
Good news! There are non-dairy options like coconut, almond or hemp milk so you can enjoy an Old-Fashioned Chocolate Milkshake without compromising your health.
This is sweetened with date paste but you could use honey, maple syrup or coconut nectar (or other natural sweetener).
Old-Fashioned Chocolate Milkshake
- 1 cup coconut, almond or hemp milk
- 2 frozen bananas (broken in thirds to make it easier to blend)
- 1 tablespoon date paste or sweetener of your choice
- 2 tablespoons cacao powder (unsweetened cacao–*not cocoa).
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, optional
Place all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth.
This is so easy and will last for 4 weeks if kept in a container in the refrigerator.
Soak 1 cup dates for 2-6 hours.
Place soaked dates and 1/3 cup water in a food processor and process until smooth. Yield 1 cup.
