Enjoy an Ounce of Dark Chocolate!
Most weight loss programs tell you not to cheat, right?
So, if you’re like me, about a day after you sign up you’re thinking about cheating.
You’re figuring out all the ways you can get around the rules and you’re already feeling guilty and defeated because you know you will cheat.
You feel like a loser.
You’re already looking for another program to be your Plan B for when, not if, you fail on this one.
You feel like you don’t deserve to lose the weight because you can’t even last one day without dreaming about cheating.
I’m so over that kind of thinking.
I encourage my clients to treat themselves to one ounce of dark chocolate *if* they want something decadent.
Life is short, do you really want to spend it depriving yourself and then cheating and then feeling horrible about yourself?
If you can keep it to ONE ounce, not more, you actually receive health benefits (benefits from chocolate–yay!) so yes, it can actually be good for you!
You will want to buy 70% dark chocolate (or higher), the best quality you can afford, ideally Fair Trade.
I’m not talking about just any chocolate or candy so toss those M&Ms and Snickers.
When I was totally addicted to sugar, I was like a dog, never recognizing that I was ‘full’ so I would keep eating and snacking all day long. A few more chocolate chips before I go upstairs. One more piece of a bar of chocolate before dinner.
I was not mindful at all.
I ate it on the run or inhaled it quickly so no one would see me. I snuck it and therefore had guilty feelings and then remorse for blowing my diet.
If you want more than an ounce, ask yourself why you need more than one ounce. Why aren’t you satisfied with that amount?
My guess is that you really don’t want it, but you’re in the habit of reaching for more. You’re stuck. You think someone is going to take it away or that you don’t deserve it.
Maybe you continue to self-sabotage your diet because you are afraid to look amazing. Maybe you have a fear about attracting attention to yourself. Maybe you don’t want the pressure of always making the right choices, it’s easier to just fly under the radar and overeat like the rest of your family and friends.
Lets take all of that heaviness away–detach those emotions and just enjoy the one ounce of rich, dark chocolate.
Before you indulge, to make sure it’s really what you want, have a full 8 ounce glass of water.
After you indulge and you’re feeling like you still want more, have a full 8 ounce glass of water.
Paint your nails with clear nail polish, wait for them to dry and then ask yourself again if you really want more than one ounce.
Close your eyes when you eat it. Don’t eat it in front of the computer or TV or in your car. Really make the effort to savor the whole experience.
What does an ounce of dark chocolate look like? It’s approximately 150 chocolate chips or a piece slightly larger than a book of matches.
So, enjoy an ounce of dark chocolate.
You don’t need anymore than that. Treat yourself but don’t defeat your clean eating habits.
