Austin runners are planning a vigil Thursday evening to mark the Boston Marathon tragedy and safe return of Central Texans who were at the race.
The vigil will start at 8 p.m. at the Rock, which is on the north side of the pedestrian bridge underneath Loop 1 (MoPac Boulevard) at Lady Bird Lake. Participants will walk or jog the 3-mile loop on the Ann and Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail around Lady Bird Lake. Participants are asked to bring a glow stick.
David Schwalm, who finished the race about an hour before the explosions, and other members of Gilbert’s Gazelles running group are organizing the event.
“The original idea was to have the Gazelles get together so we could hug, have a moment of silence, walk and get some closure,” Schwalm said. “But it’s such a tight running community and if you didn’t go to Boston you probably knew someone who did. So we decided let’s all get together and reaffirm what running is all about and be glad everyone who went up there from Austin is safe and say a prayer for those who weren’t so fortunate.”
