BASTROP COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) – The smallest evacuees are saying thank you.
Notes expressing gratitude were taped up outside the Bastrop Convention Center on Thursday morning, reaching out to all of the firefighters for trying to save homes and lives.
‘Thank you for saving our lives,’ reads one note signed with a small hand-drawn heart at the bottom.
Another reads, “We haven’t seen our house in 3 days. We don’t know if you saved it. But, thank you for trying & for saving the houses & people that you have.”
A home with several trees is shown at the bottom of that card.
And yet another reads, “Thank you so much for putting the fire out.” A drawing of a firefighter and child stand next to each other.
About a dozen of the hand-made cards from youngsters adorn the center’s public entrance. They are taped up right next to the place where firefighters pick up water and other supplies.
More than 1,300 homes have been destroyed in Bastop.
Donations for the thousands of evacuees have also been dropped off at the convention center, but those donations are then sent to the main donation site at the Rundell Business Park.
