New Thinking on Swaddling Infants

Check out almost any newborn baby picture, and if it was taken in a U.S. hospital, chances are the infant will be wrapped up in a familiar white flannel blanket with a blue-and-pink stripe. That could be about to change as a blanket alternative—known as a wearable blanket or a sleep sack—makes inroads in hospital maternity wards as part of a campaign to promote safer sleep for babies. More than 4,500 infant deaths each year occur suddenly due to factors including accidental suffocation and heart malfunctions and are broadly categorized as Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths, or SUIDS. Roughly half can't be explained after investigation and are classified as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS. SIDS rates have declined more than 50% since 1999, as research has shown putting babies on their backs to sleep decreases the risk and a national education campaign has emphasized the importance of consistently doing so. At the same time, rates of deaths classified as accidental suffocation have risen, and many SUIDS cases are linked to unsafe sleep environments, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The American Academy of Pediatrics' 2011 guidelines warning against loose crib blankets are part of an expanded "Safe ... More News

FreshPaper claims to keep produce fresh longer

Tossing out fresh fruit and vegetables that have gone bad feels like throwing money down the drain. A new product called FreshPaper claims to keep produce fresh for two to four times longer. It’s made from a mixture of spices, including fenugreek, which supposedly inhibits bacteria growth. Consumer Reports wanted to check it out. Testers placed two sets of blueberries and strawberries with FreshPaper into a fridge—one set in its original store packaging, the other in airtight plastic containers. In a different fridge they placed another set of berries without FreshPaper. Testers checked the fruit every day. The FreshPaper did not appear to have any effect on the blueberries. After two weeks all the blueberries looked pretty much the same - no matter which container. The strawberries in their original store packaging without FreshPaper showed some mold growth. The strawberries with the FreshPaper didn’t have any mold, but they were starting to spoil—same as the berries without the paper. As for the strawberries in the airtight containers, almost three weeks later the ones with the FreshPaper and the ones without the FreshPaper showed signs of spoilage. Consumer Reports says that your best bet is to store fresh produce in a ... More News

'Clutch' idea could keep teens safer on the road

Dealers say most parents go for the automatic, as that's what they're kid probably trained on in driver's ed.  Sixteen-year-old Riley Johnson's parents went the opposite direction. The shifting of the gears on the Mazda 3 requires Riley to stay busy.   “I'll always have my hand in the middle dash area,” he said. “I can't really drink anything, until like I'm at a stop light or anything.” More News

Dad helps deliver baby boy in Sam’s Club parking lot

When Fritz Rosales and Josephine Rosales, who was in labor, realized they wouldn't make it to the hospital in time, they pulled into a Sam's Club parking lot to deliver their fifth child. CBS-Sacramento interviewed the proud parents. Fritz Rosales explained that events seemed to conspire against them. First, they needed to stop at a gas station for fuel. Then, they came across a slow-moving train at a railroad crossing. "It was probably going 25-30 miles per hour, and it was probably a 90-car train," Fritz told CBS-Sacramento. "Then, just as soon as that train cleared the crossing, another train came along the same track. I was like, 'Are you serious?'" It was at this point they realized the baby wasn't going to wait. "The first thing that came to my mind was Sam's Club," Fritz told the station. Fritz pulled into the parking lot, dialed 911 and told an ambulance where they were, then set about delivering the baby, whom he and Josephine named Alexander (not Samuel). Fritz said that at first the baby wasn't breathing. Alexander then started crying, and mom and dad knew things were going to be OK. Josephine told CBS-Sacramento that she's relieved everything worked ... More News

Tim Timmons Artist Profile

Ask anyone sitting in a church pew on a Sunday morning if they believe in Jesus and the response is most always ‘yes.’ But ask them if they follow Jesus, REALLY follow him, and the question becomes tougher to answer. On his Reunion Records debut, Cast My Cares, singer/songwriter, blogger and worship leader Tim Timmons takes a look at what it means to not only believe in Jesus, but to change the world by truly following Him. “Following Jesus versus being a believer in Him is revolutionary,” Timmons says with a smile spreading across his face and his voice teeming with infectious energy. “I actually believe it will revolutionize the power of the Kingdom. What if the people who fill our weekend church services actually saw themselves as the church in the name, the power and the authority of Jesus as we walked out of that building? I get really excited just thinking about it.” Timmons has poured that enthusiasm into a really unique passion. Avoiding the usual trappings of music industry success, he’s focused not on his own music career, but on a singular mission.  “If there’s a word for me it’s ‘inviting,’ “says the happily married father of ... Are smart phone "digital wallets" really that safe?

Over the last year, people are starting to pay for stuff by waving, sliding, or tapping their smart phones. More and more apps are offering different ways to pay—they’re referred to as digital wallets. Consumer Reports Money Adviser took a look at several to see whether you really can leave your wallet at home. Starbucks is one of the hundreds of thousands of businesses nationwide that have signed up for Square Wallet. Square is compatible with a number of iPhone and Android models, and Consumer Reports Money Adviser says it’s pretty easy to use. But other digital wallets are not as widely accessible. For instance, Google Wallet and Isis aren’t available on iPhones and only work with some service providers. They also require a wireless technology that only some stores can use. And some digital wallet apps will only link with a few credit cards. So you may need to link to a prepaid card, which can incur additional fees. And that may also mean you don’t have the best protections if you lose your phone or someone breaks into your account. Prepaid cards, whether in your hand or on your phone, have no guaranteed protections against unauthorized transactions, so ... More News
