The tips mentioned below might be seen as common sense but when you’re busy trying to wrangle multiple kids into the car with the sunscreen, towels and more in tow, things get easily forgotten. Let’s face it, any family outing can turn stressful fast. Good planning is always essential to surviving any chaos that might ensue. So here is a list of practical tips that may help make your next visit to the waterpark be a little easier.
My family recently took a trip down to New Braunfels to have a fun day at Schlitterbahn. Here are a few things I learned going there for the first time as a mom:
- Pack a Lunch
Research the waterpark beforehand. Schlitterbahn allows families to bring in their own food and drinks inside. Bringing a cooler with snacks and water can save you a lot of money in the long run. While there are plenty of dining options available throughout the park, most of it is marked up and can end up costing you quite a bit by the end of the day.
Schlitterbahn also has something called Splash Cash. Basically, you can load a special card with a specified amount of money and bring it around the park with you without having to carry your wallet. These can be used in concessions and gift shops. The cards are a great option if you decide to forgo the ice chest and eat on site. It’s less to carry and keep up with. Plus, you get any money you didn’t spend back. If you decide to go this route, be sure to put more value on the card than you’re expecting to spend. Most items will probably cost more than you think and you don’t want to be stuck at the cash register short on change. I mention this because this exact thing happened to my family. We didn’t realize the cost of the food would be so high and we ended up having to change our order multiple times to get enough food for everyone without going over budget. Our wallets were in a locker on the other side of the park, meaning we would have to take a shuttle back just to eat. With a hungry and grumpy toddler on our hands, that just wasn’t a feasible option.
- Buy Waterproof Cases
Most waterparks sell these cool, waterproof phone cases. They basically look like a little plastic pouch that goes around your neck as a necklace. If you spot one in the gift shop, get one! It’s definitely worth the money. You can keep anything in here you may need and it will stay dry. This will help you leave bags, wallets and the rest tucked away safe somewhere so you don’t have to haul it around all day. We like to take one of our phones for photographic moments and our debit card along with us in ours. You could probably even fit a travel sized sunscreen in it with some effort.
- Scope Out Rides Ahead of Time
It’s never a bad idea to go in with a plan in mind. Know your riders and look up the rides available in your park to find the best match. Some of the more popular rides will have super long lines. If you know where they are, you can hit them up first thing in the morning. This should not only reduce your wait but give you a cooler time of the day to stand in line. If you have really little ones, it’s always good to know which rides might be too intense for them ahead of time. This way, you can map out what works best for your family and make the most of your time in the park.
- Don’t Skimp on Water Shoes
I’ve never been a fan of water shoes but my appreciation for them has recently grown since our last trip to Schlitterbahn. Most water parks have a lot of walking involved. Being barefoot means that you’re likely to burn your feet more than once on the hot concrete. It just takes a few minutes of basking in the sun to set your flesh on fire! Sandals don’t work well either, especially on rides when everything on your body really needs to be attached to you so you don’t lose it. So when you narrow it down like that, water shoes are really your best option. But I’d like to take it a step further and encourage you to invest a little in your water shoes. Don’t get the cheapest pair on store shelves. First of all, if you get a quality pair, they will last you a while but secondly, you need shoes that will stick with you the whole day. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve had to buy a new pair of shoes at the gift shop because a string broke off or the sole detached. It’s always an inconvenience. Save yourself the trouble and just get the right pair the first time.
