Hurricane Harvey has just been confirmed as a category 3 storm, leaving everyone to hastily prepare for what it will do. Several grocery stores around the Austin area are completely out of water, much of this is due to worries of local flooding. Stay updated on the storm by following KXAN’s coverage.
The Austin police and fire departments are currently gearing up for rescue calls. Many have been stationed by I-35 and some are headed to help with the Texas Task Force 1. Another well known rescue organization, Austin Pets Alive! is actively looking for foster homes to help with animals that are in shelters along the coast. In addition to that, the shelter could use large crates, cat litter, litter boxes and wet food for both dogs and cat. You can learn more and help here.
Austin evacuation shelters are starting to open to help bring aide to those fleeing from Hurricane Harvey. Currently, the shelters are located at Delco Center at 4601 Pecan Brook Dr. and LBJ High School at 7309 Lazy Creek Dr. Airbnb is also offering free accommodations for evacuees. The American Red Cross is in urgent need of volunteers that can work in local shelters and help evacuees. Training is happening now through 5:00PM at 2218 Pershing Drive in Austin. Anyone interested should fill out this form.
