188,000 people have been evacuated in Northern California after authorities warned an emergency spillway was in danger of failing in the Oroville Dam, which is the country’s tallest. But in a late night news conference they said there was no longer concern of the water going over the spillway. However they left the evacuations in place until they could investigate further.
Justice Scalia died a year ago today–A year after Antonin Scalia was found passed away at a Texas ranch, his seat on the Supreme Court remains vacant. The Senate GOP blocked the nomination of Merrick Garland, the judge former President Obama nominated last spring. It seems they finally have a nominee they can support: Neil Gorsuch. A legal philosophy much like Justice Scalia’s, but he likely won’t be confirmed without a fight from Democrats.
A huge snowstorm with blizzard conditions is expected to continue messing with travel today across parts of the Northeast. Winter storm warnings were in effect from Upstate New York to northern Maine, where 2 feet of snow is possible. Meanwhile, a separate storm system threatened snow, ice and rain in Texas from Amarillo to Lubbock. Just last week, a storm blanketed New England with up to 19 inches of snow and canceled more than 4,300 flights.
The nation’s largest wireless provider has been an unlimited plan holdout as T-Mobile and Sprint have gained ground on Verizon and No. 2 provider AT&T. Starting today, customers can keep their current plans or opt for an $80 monthly plan, for a single line with unlimited data, talking and texting. Families can also pay $45 per line for four lines. As customers use their smartphones for more video and photo sharing via social media networks, T-Mobile and Sprint have attracted users who don’t want to worry about using more data than their plan allows.

Austin Police arrested two people in protests against ICE operations early yesterday morning. One person was arrested for throwing fireworks into a police car, setting it on fire during a protest at Lamar & Rundberg, which is an area where many of the ICE arrests have taken place.
