Last night, Palm Sunday, The Passion aired on Fox with host, Tyler Perry. This production had a different spin to it compared to anything you might have seen in the past. The story was set in modern day with a diverse, all star cast. However, it still told the dramatic and inspiring story of Jesus of Nazareth, as he heads over the Last Supper, then betrayed by Judas, put of trial by Pontius Pilate, then crucified and resurrected.
The cast line up was astounding to see, includingTrisha Yearwood, Michael W. Smith, and Shane Harper for those who are familiar with the box office hit “God’s Not Dead”. Michael W. Smith played the role of one of the disciples. He insists The Passion Live changed his life, even before it aired on Palm Sunday. “I play a small but significant role and I’m so glad I did it. Just relationally with the people I’ve gotten to meet. Jencarlos Canela the Latin pop star who plays Jesus, Prince Royce plays Peter, he’s another Latin pop star… just bonding with these people was great,” Smith told Christian Post.
Matt Maher also contributed to the production by writing a character profile on Peter for The Passion’s website. The way he starts off his character profile of Peter is by sharing John 21:17; a great verse to biblically show who Peter was to Jesus. As Maher says, “Peter was the Rock. That’s what his name meant, and there is something sturdy and rough-hewn about him whenever we meet him in the Gospels.” Maher’s description of Peter describes him, at the same time it teaches a lesson that can be learned by Peter: Mercy.
The production is available for live streaming on Fox’s website. Did you catch it?
