Austin Disaster Relief Network (ADRN) will partner with the Central Texas American Red Cross to open a Multi-Agency Resource Center in Taylor, on Friday, June 5th from 5pm-9pm and Saturday, June 6th from 9am-3pm at the Taylor City Hall (400 Porter Street, Taylor, Texas 76574) to offer additional resources to families asking for extended help.
Last weekend, ADRN worked in partnership with the Taylor Ministerial Alliance, Central Texas VOAD and LDS to deploy clean-up teams into Taylor to assist over 70 families affected by the floods. Following the clean-up of these homes, the coordination efforts are underway to move into the rebuilding phase of long-term support.
Donations to ADRN’s Memorial Weekend Flood Fund are greatly needed to purchase building materials and supplies to repair homes. Volunteer hours will be used for the overall rebuild and repair process. Organizations assisting in this area are being confirmed.
Of the 70 families asking ADRN for long-term sponsorship from local churches on the network, 40 of these families are low income families that were residents of the Taylor Housing Authority recently affected by the floods. After seeking government assistance to help in the recovery from the loss of their belongings and damaged homes, the Taylor Housing Authority has recently been notified that there will be no additional support financially from the US Department of Housing and Development for these families as the damages did not fall under a Federal Disaster Declaration. With the families being displaced and without the ability to afford local market value housing, the Taylor Housing Authority has offered to place the 40 families in a hotel, covering the cost until the end of June. At the end of June, these families will face being homeless.
The devastation of the situation could not be more desperate at this time. ADRN, Taylor Housing Authority and local pastors are reaching out to the City of Austin, local government officials and representatives to address the dire situation for the families. The outcome of these efforts will determine the families hopeful nature to be placed back in affordable housing in Taylor.
