The magnitude-7.8 earthquake — and aftershocks — that have devastated Katmandu and other parts of Nepal is something that experts have long seen coming.
Katmandu sits on one of the most seismically active areas of the world. Compounding the problem for the capital city are poor construction standards and a growing population. Saturday’s earthquake — which left more than 2,400 dead in Katmandu, as well as dozens more on Mount Everest and in nearby India, Pakistan and Tibet — the most devastating to hit Nepal in 80 years.

Fifty percent of proceeds from yesterday’s sales at Luigi’s Italian Restaurant in Leander will go to benefit a Williamson County family facing a devastating loss. Two of Crystal Draper’s four children, 15-year-old Koby and 9-year-old Kirsten, were killed when a suspected drunk driver plowed into the back of the family’s Nissan Ultima the night of April 22. Crystal Draper, as well as her two surviving children, also suffered critical injuries in the accident. The eldest child has been released from the hospital, while another remains in intensive care. Crystal has shown improvement, but remains hospitalized.
The City of Austin is scrambling to hire enough lifeguards to staff pools this summer, and for the first time ever the city is offering a hiring bonus. The city needs to fill a total of 750 positions, and if it doesn’t, the opening of neighborhood pools will be delayed and hours possibly reduced for swimmers. There are 50 aquatic facilities in the city, including Deep Eddy Pool. The city is offering a $100 Visa gift card hiring incentive for the first 500 lifeguards hired if they work the first week of summer, June 5-12.
Storms last night left thousands of people without power. Austin Energy and other energy providers are working on getting it back up.
The Lake Austin exit from southbound Mopac is closed for at least a month. It’s because of the toll lane they’re building. Enfield Road will be the detour.
