Did you find yourself at a less-than Norman Rockwell-style table this year for the holidays? I have some relieving news.
You’re in good company.
I was discussing the holidays with a coworker the other day, and we began joking that perhaps what many of our tables need is an extra seat for a licensed family therapist to mediate.
“Yes,” he laughed, “they could wear a referee shirt! With a whistle!”
Tweeeeeet: Passive Aggressive
Tweeeeeet: Condescending Tone
(Napkin on the table, like a flag on the play): Offsides.
To be fair, I don’t mean to make light of family dynamics. Quite the opposite. I’m just looking for ways to acknowledge the reality of what happens when you get a bunch of very different people in close proximity to share a meal. And one of the great equalizers I’ve found (at least in my own home) is humor.
My goal for this new year is to laugh at the quirks, not be undone by them. How about you?
